Where Are The Turkeys?
I’m not talking about my turkeys being missing, thank goodness. The five of them are pottering around happily, blissfully unaware that Christmas is just around the corner! Actually, two will be reprieved because we’ve decided to keep a pair of blacks to breed in the hope of turkeylings in the spring.
I’m referring to what we call Chicken Fest in this house i.e. the aviculture expo that’s been taking place in Boussac this weekend. I told you about the pigeon show last weekend. Well, this week it was the whole caboodle on display – not only pigeons, but doves, ducks, geese, chickens, rabbits and guinea-pigs, and even a couple of Lady Amherst pheasants.
And ostrich food!
But sadly no turkeys. I was hoping to track down some Ardennes Rouges as this is a breed I’d love to keep.
However, it was still a very enjoyable visit with some weird and wonderful birds and bunnies on display. Here are a few for you.
The show was organised by the local Asso des Aviculteurs Creusois, and very well too. It was held in the glacial agricultural halls, but was all very clean and tidily laid out. We saw a couple of people going round topping up food and water for the animals, and their cages all had plenty of clean straw in. We saw a gendarme there and wondered if he might be checking up on animal welfare or something, in which case he was wasting his time as the livestock was all being very well looked after, but perhaps he was just nipping in to enjoy the spectacle, like the rest of us.
If there’s just been a few turkeys, it would have been perfect!
